Quilting

Saturday, November 15 | 10:00–4:00

Gather in the farmhouse where Howell Farm quilters will share techniques in quilting, paper piecing, and crazy quilt embroidery stitches. All can lend a hand and help put the finishing touches on a quilt by the tie method. Antique quilts dating from 1840’s to early 1900’s will be on display throughout the farmhouse.

A special children’s “scavenger hunt” on the farm for the sources of traditional quilt pattern names will be ongoing and will include farm chores. Children that complete the scavenger hunt can choose colorful squares from the Howell Farm fabric basket and see their pieces sewn together on a treadle sewing machine.

Vintage and present-day quilts will also be on display in the Howell Farm visitor center Fish barn. See firsthand how colorful feed sacks were used in quilting or try your hand arranging log cabin squares into patterns of “Barn Raising”, “Fields & Furrows”, or “Sunshine & Shadows”. Vote for your favorite quilt while you warm yourself with homemade lunch fare that will be available for purchase in the visitor center.
