SUMMER ON THE FARM: Station Activities

Wagon Tour of Farming Operations: Old-fashioned horsepower will pull your wagon into a landscape reminiscent of the Hopewell Township of a century ago, when farm lanes were bordered by snake fences and osage orange trees, and when farmers still worked by hand and horsepower to cultivate their fields of corn, oats, wheat and hay. Operations vary daily, so there is no telling what you might see: a reaper-binder or haytedder in action, a flock of sheep coming in from the meadow, or a farm crew bringing in the sheaves.

Meet the Farm Animals: It's cool inside the barn, where you will meet our work horses, oxen, and cows and learn about their care and feeding. At the henhouse, you will visit a flock of Barred Rocks, who each lay an egg a day during the warm months of the year. Keep an eye open for ducks, geese, guinea fowl, farm cats, and for our farm dog, Maggie.

Hands-On Program--Hog Chores: To get a feel for farm life, you have to do chores...so here is your chance to help the farmer with one of the daily routines. First you will help mix a batch of hog feed--which means you will shell and grind field corn, and combine it with soybean meal and vitamins. After pouring the finished product into a hog feeder, you may want to volunteer to add water to the hog wallow. It's more fun than you think...especially on a hot day!
