Besides gowing corn, hay and grain, many farmers in Pleasant Valley grew vegetables as cash crops. Although vegetables grown in truck gardens were sometimes used for canning and cooking, supplementing what was grown in the kitchen garden, most were produced with markets in mind. At the turn-of-the-20th century, for example, tomato canning factories were located in nearby Titusville and Hopewell, reflecting the great demand for tomatoes and tomato products. |
