Raising a Model Barn

Hewing Sequence - 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8

The sills of the Henry Philips Barn were hand hewn and their replacements have been created using the hewing technique illustrated in this sequence. A hewing yard was set up at the south end of the barn and staff carpenter, Tevis Stites-Robertson, learned and demonstrated hewing techniques. His description of the hewing process follows.

Hewing logs is an almost-forgotten art, and I am indebted to Dave Kirkpatrick for teaching me something of the technique.

There are two basic types of axe used in hewing a log. The first is a symmetrical headed axe, either a regular limbing axe or a larger Hewing axe.

The second type is a Broadaxe, which is asymmetrical. The head is flat on one face, and beveled on the other. The handle is crooked, angled toward the side with the bevel.
