In
the Ewing Presbyterian Church Cemetery, on Scotch Road stands a bronze
obelisk erected in 1882 by Charles Fish to mark his grave and the
graves of his parents and three unmarried siblings. In the right
background of the first photo is a stone obelisk marking the plot
of the Benjamin Fish family. It is surrounded
by the individual grave stones of members of the family. The proximity
of these two families and the use of the obelisk would seem to indicate
a family connection. Work
is currently underway to establish this connection. The Benjamin
Fish family has roots in the Trenton/Ewing area going back to about
1745 from a family that settled in Lynn, Massachusetts in the 1630s
and over several generations moved to Long Island and then to Trenton.
The small stones at the base of the obelisk are for Andrew Fish, brother of Charles, and Joseph and Penelope Fish, their parents.
Note the sheaf of wheat motif on the Charles Fish obelisk. This must be a symbol of the family's devotion to agriculture.
Charles Fish honored his three unmarried siblings on the family obelisk. Andrew and Margaret lived with him on the farm in Hopewell throughout their lives. Amy lived in Washington, DC as an adult.
Charles also honored his parents Joseph and Penelope Fish.
