The Farm's workhorses provide power for plowing, harrowing, fertilizing, planting, cultivating, mowing, reaping, and transportation. They range in age from 4-27 years old and in weight from 1200 pounds to almost one ton. By breed they are Percheron crosses, Belgian crosses, and mixed breeds. At the turn-of-the-century, farm horses tended to be lighter, multi-purpose workers used for fieldwork, buggy power, or even riding. Two or three such animals would have supplied the power for a 100-acre family farm. But remember that farmers, then, could borrow a neighbor's horses when making a big hitch or replacing a lame animal, eliminating the need for back-up horses.

Our horses generally come with their names since we don't breed our horses.   For more information on each horse, and a picture, click on the horse's name in the menu to the left.
