Sheep Shearing
2011 Date: May 7

Howell Farm Sheep

The 28th annual "Shear Fun" program features sheep shearing, sheep herding, and related arts, crafts and demonstrations. Shepherd Linda Fossetta of Blairstown, NJ will highlight the program with sheep herding demonstrations at 11:30am, 1:30pm, and 3:00pm. Fossetta will use Border Collies to work the flock and to introduce visitors to herding techniques.

Sheep shearing demonstrations will take place at noon, 1:00pm, 2:00pm and 2:30pm.. In keeping with the Farm's time period, shearers will use hand shears. Children can crank a set of circa 1900 "automatic shears", the precursor to electric shears.

Throughout the day, visitors can meet twin lambs and try their hand at spinning wool. Wool products and natural fleeces will be on display and for sale. Baked goods and lunch fare will be available in the visitor center throughout the day.

Also attending this year is the Hunterdon County Rug Artisans Guild. Hand hooked rugs will be on display and the art of making them demonstrated.
