Fashions from The New Jersey Women’s Heritage Trail
2011 Date: May 6

Fashionable figures from New Jersey Women’s Heritage Trail will appear at Howell Living History Farm Friday, May 6 when the farm holds its Fourth Annual Fashion Show.

Twenty reenactors representing historic sites and women from the New Jersey Women’s Heritage Trail will walk the runway during the event, which takes place from 7:30-9:30 p.m. and includes live music, narrated character presentations, and appearances by audience members in period attire. The event will be held in the farm’s visitor center barn, whose center bay—once used as a threshing floor—will serve as a fashion runway.

The New Jersey Women’s Heritage Trail recognizes the contributions made by women to the states’s history. The Trail is a collaborative effort of the Alice Paul Centennial Foundation, the New Jersey State Historic Preservation Office and Preservation Partners. New Jersey is the first state in the country to do such a comprehensive survey of women’s historic sites. A sampling of the listed sites will be highlighted at this year’s fashion show. Taylor Williams, of the American Historic Threatre, will portray Alice Paul, a well-known women’s suffrage leader from New Jersey.

Visitors are encouraged to join the fun by arriving in attire that was common during any period in New Jersey history—from pre-Colonial to mid-20th Century. Before and after the performance, historically dressed guests can pose on the runway and have their picture taken by the fashion show photographer, compliments of the Friends of Howell Farm. Prizes will be awarded to those deemed “best dressed” by the farm’s fashion scouts.

Admission to the Fashion Show is a suggested donation of $4. Parking is free. Gates open at 6:30 p.m., with seating offered on a first come, first serve basis. Light refreshments will be available for sale.
